Guadalupe Westside Community Plan

The Guadalupe Westside Community Plan (GWCP) was prepared by the residents of the Guadalupe Westside area in partnership with the City of San Antonio’s Planning and Community Development Departments. The plan was created by many dedicated community members who committed a year and a half of their evenings and weekends to identify strengths and weaknesses and brainstorm actions that can be taken to reach their vision for how the community should develop over the next twenty or thirty years.

The GWCP, like many community plans is organized around five general areas: Infrastructure; Public Safety; Community Health; Economic Development; and Housing.

Although the Avenida Guadalupe Association made the initial application, the plan area boundaries extend beyond the boundaries of the Avenida Guadalupe Neighborhood Association. The GWCP boundaries are: Commerce Street to the North, SW 19th Street to the West, Hwy 90 to the South, and Frio City Road and Alazan Creek to the East. It includes the Avenida Guadalupe and Brady Garden Neighborhood Associations. As a result, the Planning Team includes members of the Avenida Guadalupe Association and many other individuals representing the interests of the greater "Westside" area.

The GWCP was adopted by City Council in May 2007. As an officially adopted plan, the document will be used by City Departments, Boards, and Commissions as a guide for decision-making (ex: annual projects selected as part of the City budget process). The AGA has, as an organization and through some of its individual members, been an integral part of this process from its inception and is committed to ensuring the plans implementation in our community. The AGA operates through its seven committees. Four of those committees have been given the charge of splitting up the respective chapters of this plan and ensuring that the goals, objectives, and action steps are carried out. The key to implementing the goals of the plan rests with OUR community.

On October 19, 2007, the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) awarded the City of San Antonio with the Chapter’s 2007 Project Planning Award for the Guadalupe Westside Community Plan (GWCP). The Award was presented at a luncheon held in Addison, Texas on October 19, 2007, during the Texas APA annual conference.

Also on January 18, 2008 the San Antonio Section of the APA presented the City of San Antonio and the Avenida Guadalupe Association with the 2007 Comprehensive Planning Award.

Congratulations! / ¡Felicidades! and a huge thanks (mil gracias!) to all the residents and community members who helped make the GWCP such a success! May we continue to make a difference for our community and continue collaborations that were long overdue!
