AGA History/Overview
What started as a gathering of concerned individuals wanting to make a difference in their neighborhood has blossomed into a respected community development corporation and neighborhood association, setting a standard for inner city revitalization, the Avenida Guadalupe Association (AGA).
In its first 28 years, the AGA has yielded substantial successes on both the economic and housing development fronts, stimulating business and commerce while beautifying and restoring the physical and spiritual character of the Avenida Guadalupe Neighborhood. The AGA’s highly successful projects range from structural renovations and brand new construction to housing counseling and cultural events.
The AGA’s community-based efforts began with the renovation of the historic Guadalupe Theatre, now under the management of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, an anchor in the neighborhood. The AGA then constructed the Plaza Guadalupe located on the 1300 block of Guadalupe Street. This location was transformed from a dilapidated area to a beautiful community park where children and families can play and neighbors can gather. The next economic development project for the AGA became the El Parian Business Incubator, a facility built to provide low cost office space and to cultivate commerce and activity in the area. Then the renovation of the El Progreso Community Center was tackled and it today serves as a meeting and rental space for private parties, quinceaneras, and birthday celebrations. Additional accomplishments can be found under “Accomplishments.”
The AGA has devoted the past 28 years to beautifying this neighborhood and restoring the vibrancy and vitality of this community. Careful attention has been given to preserving the historic character of the neighborhood while encouraging growth, because the ultimate goal of each endeavor is to enhance the AGA’s ability to resume its traditional role in San Antonio.
